Eco-chic accommodation for the wellness lover with a rock star soul.
The best part of my stay was grabbing a rental bike from Sherwood and enjoying a morning ride around Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains with morning rays of sun dancing through hilltops and hitting the water - it was a pretty magical sight.
I was recently (January 2019) traveling alone and had a one night stopover in Queenstown, New Zealand. I chose to stay at Sherwood because I’d heard wonderful things about its sustainability and design elements, the community feel and the hotel’s proximity to the airport, nature and the city center. Sherwood was once part of a chain of 1980’s mock-Tudor motor inns and while the original façade remains, much of the interior has been updated with sustainability features and design elements that create the feeling of an inviting cabin away from home. A vegetable garden, yoga studio, fire pit, farm to table restaurant, and an intimate space for live music all provide a warm welcome to for travelers and locals alike. There’s a sense of space and comfort at Sherwood, and even the smallest rooms are a generous size, boasting kitchens, daybeds, and views over the mountains and Lake Wakatipu. Moody industrial fixtures and chunky metal furniture are featured alongside local artisans handy work - commissioned artwork, local merino blankets, recycled kilim rugs for curtains and pillows, and local timber beds are in each room. With bean bags and ping pong tables dotting the courtyard, communal spaces and dining tables encourage interaction, with further social opportunity in yoga classes and live music events. Personally, I am an outdoors lover and an explorer, so the best part of my stay was grabbing a rental bike from Sherwood and enjoying a morning ride around Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains with morning rays of sun dancing through hilltops and hitting the water - it was a pretty magical sight. Next time, I will do more hiking and also check out some local vineyards. I will definitely return to Sherwood - the location and energy are perfect for enjoying nature or staying in at this decidedly cool local meets tourist venue.
